An explosion of joy in Eritrea: Girmay's home country is turned upside down again after third stage win in Tour

Biniam Girmay (24) sprinted to a third stage win in the Tour de France on Thursday . “Does the green jersey give me extra strength? Definitely. I feel much faster in my head, that jersey gives me so much confidence,” beamed the Eritrean afterwards. In his home country, the victory was celebrated exuberantly; for many young people, Girmay is a symbol of hope and pride.

Green jersey Biniam Girmay is one of the biggest cycling heroes of the moment. Especially in his home country Eritrea he is adored, as can be clearly seen in the images above. Hundreds of people stormed the streets in the capital Asmara to celebrate the victory of 'Bini'.

Two years ago, the images below also went around the world. After his victory in Gent-Wevelgem, Girmay was welcomed as a hero in his home country. People flocked to the streets to catch a glimpse of the Intermarché–Wanty rider. With honking cars and a column of cyclists, 'Bini' was given a festive welcome at the time.

Writing history

In Turin, Biniam Girmay made history as the first black African stage winner in the Tour de France. “I’m not normally so focused on making history. It’s certainly not my motivation to race, but this victory will cause an explosion of joy in my country. In 2015, Daniel Teklahaimanot had already been on the podium in the polka dot jersey for a few days, and now we’re showing that we can also win stages,” Girmay said proudly.

A few days later he already has three stage wins to his name and seems determined to keep the green jersey. With this excellent form and the support of his home country, Girmay will undoubtedly compete for the day's victory several more times.
