'King of the North' arrives in London

It felt surreal to track a British prime minister-in-waiting as his train pulled into London’s Euston station and his taxi struggled through the traffic in sweltering early summer heat. But there is a buzz around Andy Burnham right now. How quickly Keir Starmer has been left behind in the ruthless realm of British politics. Just hours after he announced his resignation, Labour MPs gathered jubilantly around Burnham for selfies in Westminster Hall. Much has been said of Burnham’s success as mayor of Manchester, but there’s already unease about how little is known of his approach to key national and international issues. He has said he wants a completely new political direction – here’s what that might look like and the challenges it could entail.

Ten years ago today, the UK voted narrowly to leave the European Union. It has proved to be one of the most consequential and controversial events of recent years. After the referendum, multiple versions of what Brexit should look like were floated and argued over. A decade on, it feels like a good time to review the options the country had but didn’t take.

If, like me, you can’t move on social media for personal trainers urging you to “lift heavy” then there’s interesting news. Not only does lifting weights build muscle and maybe help with shedding a few pounds, data has shown that it could also help people to live longer. And the best bit is just modest amounts of strength training appear to bear fruit.
