El-Sisi, Eritrea's Afwerki to hold Cairo talks on bilateral ties, regional issues

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is set to receive Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Cairo on Monday during an official visit, where the two leaders will hold talks on strengthening bilateral relations and discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern, the Egyptian presidency said.

The meeting is expected to focus on enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea across various fields, as well as exchanging views on developments affecting the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea region, and other key regional and international issues.

Egypt and Eritrea maintain close political ties and have intensified their coordination in recent years on regional security challenges, particularly those related to stability in the Horn of Africa and the safeguarding of security in the Red Sea region.

The visit also follows a series of high-level contacts between the two leaders.

During their most recent meeting in Cairo in October 2025, El-Sisi and Afwerki reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing coordination on regional issues, particularly developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin.

Over the past several years, Egypt and Eritrea have steadily expanded political, security, and diplomatic coordination, driven by shared concerns over instability in Sudan, security challenges in Somalia, growing geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa, and the need to safeguard navigation through the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandeb Strait.

Both countries have consistently advocated respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional states and have emphasized that security arrangements in the Red Sea should be led primarily by the countries bordering the waterway.

A major turning point in this partnership came in October 2024, when El-Sisi, Afwerki, and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud convened a tripartite summit in Asmara.

The leaders agreed to establish a framework for strategic cooperation to strengthen regional stability, support Somalia's state institutions, combat terrorism, and enhance coordination on Red Sea security.

The summit also established a trilateral ministerial mechanism to follow up on implementation and coordinate positions on regional issues.

The latest boost in Egypt-Eritrea relations came in May 2026 during a visit to Asmara by a high-level Egyptian delegation led by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir.

During the visit, Egypt and Eritrea signed a landmark maritime transport cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening transport links and expanding trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two Red Sea countries.

The agreement reflected growing economic ties and the two countries' shared strategic vision for the Red Sea. Egyptian and Eritrean officials used the occasion to reaffirm their longstanding position that Red Sea security and governance should remain the responsibility of littoral states, amid increasing international competition and military activity in the region.

For Egypt, Eritrea's strategic location along the western shore of the Red Sea makes it a key partner in Cairo's broader engagement with the Horn of Africa.

For Eritrea, closer ties with Egypt provide an important avenue for political coordination, economic cooperation, and regional influence.
