West Midlands Police has named the victim - who was pronounced dead at the scene on Friday - as Brahane Yordanos.
Paramedics had found the 19-year-old in a property of multiple occupation in Unett Street, Newtown.
Nothing could be done to save the young woman, originally from Eritrea, East Africa, and a murder investigation has been launched.
Initial enquiries led detectives to a man known to the victim but he has since been ruled out of their investigation.
Police would also like to hear from anyone who knows who may have been visiting her overnight on Friday.
Detective Inspector Jim Mahon, from the homicide unit, said: “Our investigation is progressing at pace, but we are struggling to find anyone who knew much about her.
A cordon remains at the property while officers examine the scene.
