Egypt has hailed on Monday the signing of the peace declaration between Ethiopia and Eritrea following the summit between Eritrea's President Isaias Afewerki and Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The meeting between the Ethiopian and the Eritrean heads of state was the first such meeting in nearly two decades.

"The visit [of Ahmed to Asmara] and its results will undoubtedly contribute to opening a new page between the two countries in order to achieve security and stability in the region, which will help achieve the aspirations of the peoples of the two countries in peace and development after many years of conflict and instability," a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read.

Egypt also expressed the hope that this agreement will serve as an example for ending all conflicts on the African continent.

The statement also expressed Egypt's aspiration to intensify cooperation with Eritrea, Ethiopia and all brotherly countries in Africa to promote stability and achieve development and raise growth rates to eradicate poverty.

The statement also praised the efforts of the political leadership in both countries to complete the agreement.
