Alarming climate prediction

There’s a 98% chance of the hottest year on record coming in the next five years, and a 66% chance of exceeding the critical 1.5°C warming threshold for at least one of those years, according to the latest World Meteorological Organization update.

The prediction that an individual year above 1.5℃ global warming is more likely than not is alarming. Does this mean the Paris Agreement has already failed in its goal of keeping the global temperature increase below 1.5°C? No, but as Andrew King explains, it is a warning about how close we are to a disastrously hot planet if we don’t rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero.

Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela helped lead South Africa to democracy after relentless persecution by apartheid forces throughout their married life. They have come to occupy a mythological place in South African history. Now a major new book about their relationship explores their humanity, warts and all, yet also considers how they played a hand in building their own myths. Jonny Steinberg discusses his latest work.
