Seven people have been detained by immigration officers after police stopped a lorry on the M1 when they saw hands waving from the trailer.

Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire road policing unit stopped the lorry on Thursday, (May 10) near Hemel Hempstead and searched it.

Inside they found seven people who they detained to be handed over to the Borders Agency over immigration issues.

The Home Office, which the Borders Agency is part of, confirmed that two adults and five children had been detained by officers from the Hertfordshire Constabulary.

A spokesman for the Home Office said: "Immigration Enforcement was contacted by Hertfordshire Police on Thursday May 10 after police officers attended an incident on the M1 motorway at Hemel Hempstead.

"Two men aged 20 and 28, who presented themselves as being from Eritrea and five minors were found on a lorry.

"The Home Office will progress the cases in accordance with immigration rules. The five minors have been referred to social services."
