The Horn Africa countries and Yemen were at a great risk of terrorist attacks despite the recent defeat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, EU envoy said.

The European Union Special Representative for Sudan, Mr Jean Michel, warned on Tuesday of the expansion of terrorism in East and West Africa.

He expressed the sentiments in Khartoum during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the counter-terrorism and money laundry efforts in the Horn of Africa and Yemen.

“The defeat of Islamic State Iraq and Syria (ISIS) will not mean that the risk is diminishing, particularly in the Horn of Africa as well as Yemen,” he stated.

The MoU will support the EU Counter-terrorism Action Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen agreement that was signed in 2014.

Mr Michel added that the agreement would focus on information sharing, training of concerned security agents, good governance, law enforcement and accountability.
Sudanese Foreign ministry undersecretary Abdul Gani Alnaim confirmed the commitment of Khartoum to counter terrorism and money laundering.

“This MoU is aimed at strengthening capacities of our national law enforcement personnel through equipping the judiciary, prosecution and officers with the knowledge, skills and practices to meet today’s dynamic challenges, so I do believe that this programme will have its positive impact on our national delivery when it comes to combating terrorism and violent terrorism,” Mr Michel stated.

The 2014 EU Counter-terrorism Action Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen is a comprehensive strategic five-year plan to counter terrorism and combat money laundering in the region.
