The Court of Appeal in The Hague today convicted fifteen defendants on appeal for their involvement in the riots around the Opera event center in The Hague on February 17, 2024. They were found guilty of public violence. Three of them were also convicted of incitement, arson, and assault. One defendant was acquitted because there was insufficient certainty regarding his identification.

The riots broke out during a meeting at the Hague event center, where approximately 700 supporters of the Eritrean regime were present. The suspects intended to disrupt the meeting. During the ensuing disturbances, dozens of police officers were injured and over 700,000 euros worth of damage was caused.

The court has imposed prison sentences ranging from four to thirty months. For all convicted persons, part of the prison sentence was suspended, with a probationary period of two years.

One convicted person remains in pre-trial detention. The other convicted persons have already served their prison sentences and do not have to return to prison. In addition, a community service order was imposed on one suspect. Furthermore, the court granted the claims of a large number of injured parties and awarded damages.
