Hofheim (dpa/lhe) – According to police, between 500 and 600 people have attended the Eritrea Festival in Hofheim (Main-Taunus district) so far. Everything is proceeding peacefully, a police spokeswoman said. Most of those present are families who want to enjoy the festivities.
According to police, the Main-Taunus district has established a temporary weapons-free zone, as it did last year. The festival is scheduled to run until Sunday.
The organizer expected a turnout in the high hundreds to low thousands, the Interior Ministry in Wiesbaden had previously announced. A spokesperson explained that security authorities had no information indicating a concrete threat to the event or any anticipated disruptions.
In 2022 and 2023, similar events in Germany saw violent clashes between opposing groups, as the ministry explained. At the edge of an Eritrean festival in Giessen in July 2023, opponents of the event attacked police officers with stones, bottles, and smoke bombs. Several officers were injured.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Eritrea Festival 2026 in Hofheim proceeded "entirely peacefully and without incident." The West Hesse Police Headquarters had prepared appropriate operational measures "to ensure safety and order, as well as the smooth running of the event."
