Marius Mayrhofer won the final stage of Boucles de la Mayenne on Sunday. The German Tudor rider was part of the day's breakaway and stayed well out of the hands of the peloton on the local lap in Laval. Mayrhofer was not a threat in the general classification; that battle was won by Aaron Gate of XDS Astana , because his most dangerous competitors did not grab bonus seconds along the way and at the finish.
On the last day of Boucles de la Mayenne, a relatively flat stage of 164 kilometers to Laval was on the program. Along the way there were three hills for the mountain classification, but it was really a finale for the sprinters. In the last 20 kilometers, the riders rode four local laps, after which they finished on a slightly uphill finish street.
In the general classification it was still exciting, because Aaron Gate had anything but a reassuring lead. Pierre Latour was in the same time as Gate, and Thibaud Gruel , Paul Lapeira , Benoît Cosnefroy , Rory Townsend and Marijn van den Berg were also within 10 seconds of Gate.
Marius Mayrhofer surprises the peloton
At the front, Sénéchal dropped out early in the final, after which the other three leaders bravely held their ground against the peloton. The difference fluctuated around a minute for a long time, but for Mayrhofer it was not fast enough. The German rode away from Meens and Knight 15 kilometers before the finish, and started the last 10 kilometers around Laval with a lead of almost a minute.
Mayrhofer held his ground well. He lost little time and crossed the finish line solo, while the peloton was still racing at a razor's edge. Marijn van den Berg started the sprint early, but was outclassed in the final meters. It was Biniam Girmay who won the peloton sprint. Bryan Coquard came third in the stage and thus kept Paul Lapeira from important bonuses that could have given him a jump in the standings.
