Matthew Brennan beats Biniam Girmay in Rund um Köln sprint

British breakthrough Visma-Lease a Bike spinter outpaces Girmay and Israel Premier-Tech's Itamar Einhorn - taking him to seven wins so far in 2025

The 107th edition of the Rund um Köln was won by Matthew Brennan . The Briton from Visma | Lease a Bike , who rode the German one-day race for the continental team Killer Bees , was too strong for Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) and Itamar Einhorn (Israel-Premier Tech) in the sprint of a group of favourites. The 19-year-old sprinter thus grabbed his seventh victory of the season.

The month of May means that we will have two major one-day races in Germany on the program. On the first day of the month, it was Michael Matthews who won Eschborn-Frankfurt. The Rund um Köln is a different beast: where it is the good climbing sprinters who rule in central Germany, in Cologne it is really up to the pure sprinters. However, there is also a chance of a breakaway winning, and that can be seen from the honor roll of the race. The hills along the way are short, but vicious.

Just look at the 2022 edition, when Nils Politt won. The German was also there this year, albeit in the service of the national team. Last year's winner, Casper van Uden, was in Italy for the Giro d'Italia. At the start: his teammate Pavel Bittner (Picnic PostNL), Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) and Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike development). Arnaud De Lie was also there, but the Lotto sprinter made his comeback after a rest. The Belgian himself had low expectations .

Peloton break at executioner

A German race, and therefore German attackers. From the start, seven men rode away, including five home riders. Of course, they were given little space by the sprinter teams: Visma | Lease a Bike and Intermarché took responsibility and kept the seven in sight. Halfway through, the gap was only 2 minutes, and after that it only decreased further. The Agathaberg was the judge of the race, at about 54 kilometers from the finish. Not long, but steep, and there Tudor accelerated under the leadership of Marco Haller. It split the peloton, and suddenly there were only 40 riders left at the front.

Among them were Brennan and Girmay, but also names like Amaury Capiot (Arkéa) and Hugo Hofstetter (Israel - Premier Tech). The pace was increased considerably there, and the escapees were therefore wasted. The second peloton followed at a minute behind the leading group. There were many men from Tudor, Red Bull and Picnic, but they left the work to the small BIKE AID. It was clear that their sprinters were simply focused.

Small peloton and little control in the final

Haller also pushed on the penultimate climb, but there he was overshadowed by Politt. The German pulled at full force, but Brennan was there like a shot. In third position he slipped along, but everything came together again. The small peloton was difficult to control, but Intermarché-Wanty still had Jonas Rutsch who did the dirty work for his leader. On the Bensberg, the last climb, it was war again. There Valentin Retailleau (TotalEnergies) attacked, but again everything came together.

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe took control for Meeus, but the small number of helpers made it difficult. There were a few attacks, but the teams of Meeus and Brennan managed to restore calm. An attack by Ole Theiler, who rides for the tiny REMBE | Rad-net, seemed hopeless. But the sprinter teams left the work to the training team of Visma | Lease a Bike, and the youngsters had a damn hard time. With the help of Intermarché, the German was caught anyway.

So it became a sprint in Cologne Lotto brought Milan Menten into position, but Girmay was also brought in. Meeus chose the wheel of the Eritrean, but Brennan was behind him again. It became a duel between Girmay and Brennan, which was won by the 19-year-old Brit. It is his seventh victory of the season.

Find the rankings and complete results of the Tour de Cologne 2025, which took place this Sunday, May 18 around Cologne (181 km).

The 2025 Tour of Cologne (Rund um Köln) takes place this Sunday , May 18. This is the 107th edition of this German classic, registered on the UCI Europe Tour calendar in category 1.1. This one-day race is one of the oldest in Germany, with the first edition dating back to 1908.

Routes and favorites of the 2025 edition

The route for this edition covers 181 km , about 14 km less than the previous year. It still starts and finishes in Cologne . The course is hilly, with several climbs and descents, the last of which is 23 km from the finish. This profile could favor a sprint finish of a small group, as in the previous edition won by Casper van Uden .

Among the favorites of the day are the Eritrean Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), the British Matthew Brennan (Visma Lease a Bike) and the returning Belgian Arnaud De Lie (Lotto).

The race is scheduled to finish around 3:45 p.m. Find the complete results of the 2025 Tour de Cologne below.
