Alem Shimemi, 30, fell 100ft to the ground after she was allegedly held out of the window on a housing estate in Glasgow.

A man was seen running away from the tower block shortly after the incident, on Monday at 5.15pm, but was held down by witnesses until police arrived.

Speaking to the Daily Record, one local said: “I could hear hysterical screaming and I went to the window and saw the woman being held by the hair.

“She didn’t fall right away, because she was trying desperately to hold on to the window sill and she was scratching at the wall with her feet, trying to get a hold to keep herself from falling.

"It was terrible to watch.”

The eyewitness, who took the harrowing photo, helped to tackle the man - who tried to run away from the scene - to the ground.

He described him as an “African guy” and said he tried to get away but fell over a wall and was grabbed by a concierge and a few women - he was then held down until the police arrived.

The eyewitness said he “looked out of it” and was “chanting” and “praying”.

It is not clear if the man is related or known to Alem.

Alem, who is an Eritrean national, was described as a “wonderful person” by friends at her local Eritrean Orthodox Church, which is trying to make arrangements to send her body back to her family in Eritrea.

No confirmed charges have been made but police are calling on witnesses to come forward.

Scotland police confirmed the 30-year-old's death is being treated as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Aileen Boyle said: “This is a very busy area and I am sure that there are people who may have witnessed this incident who have not yet come forward to police.

“The details they hold could be vital to this investigation and I would urge anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible.”
