20 Eritrean refugees have to leave Switzerland

At a press conference today, the Confederation presents the results of the review of the preliminary recordings of asylum seekers from Eritrea.

the essentials in brief

  • The SEM has reviewed 250 Eritreans, which have been provisionally accepted in Switzerland.
  • In nine percent of the cases - that is 20 people - the recording is now canceled.
  • The SEM targets 2800 additional dossiers.

The State Secretariat for Migration SEM has reviewed the provisional admission of around 250 people from Eritrea as part of a pilot project. The reason for this review is a judgment of the Federal Administrative Court of 17 August 2017, in which it stated that it considered the return for rejected asylum seekers from Eritrea in their home country as in principle considered reasonable.

The SEM will review a total of 2800 preliminary photographs of rejected asylum seekers from Eritrea by mid-2019. First priority includes families, unaccompanied minors and young people in education.

Of the 250 Eritreans examined so far, 20 have to leave Switzerland. These termination proceedings can be challenged before the Federal Administrative Court.
