Minister of

KHARTOUM (VG) On his first diplomatic journey to North Africa, Immigration and Integration Minister Sylvi Listhaug (Frp) stressed that migrants and refugees are best helped in the neighborhoods. But she meets resistance from local authorities.

Sudan's borders range from 7000 to 8000 kilometers through North Africa - and the country has become an important transit country for migrants and refugees from the Horn of Africa and West Africa who want to go north to Europe.

In a meeting of 13 dress and uniform dresses from the authorities in Sudan, Listhaug emphasized the importance of helping refugees and migrants in the neighborhoods.

Sudanese authorities are clear that they want more help from Norway to stop migration to Europe. But Sudan's immigration minister would not agree that migrants and refugees from the region should stay in Sudan.

Q:- Should go home to their home country

Sudan is a Muslim country with Arabic as its main language, unlike its neighboring Eritrea and Ethiopia. Sudan's Interior Minister, General Hamid Manan, points out that they have major challenges in integrating refugees and migrants in their country.

Q:- Do you agree that migrants from Somalia and Eritrea should stay in this region rather than go to Europe?

- No, if they are from Eritrea or another country, I think they should go home to their home country, so the support can go to them instead of here. There will be complications of integrating them into society here, "says Minister of the Interior Manan to VG.

"This is a major debate in Europe. Should we send money here, the migrants are also here, or are some of the migrants going to Europe?

"I prefer that they go to Europe or to their home country, otherwise Sudan will become a refugee center, and all refugees will come and stay. It is not practical with the integration of so many nationalities, clearly, says the minister to VG.

Listhaug wants as few as possible to Norway

VG follows this week Listhaug traveling in North and East Africa . In Sudan, Listhaug repeatedly emphasized the mantra of the Solberg government for help in the surrounding areas, that Norway can help more if the money is used here, rather than being used on asylum seekers in Norway.

- These countries are key countries. They are important for migration today, but may in future be even more important. It is predicted a rather explosive population development in these countries, and in several countries in Africa. They are a transit country for migration from several countries in Africa, so if they get more control there, trafficking in human beings and smugglers, it will affect development for Europe too, "said Listhaug to VG on his way to Sudan.

To Sudan's Interior Minister she said:

"We can help many more for the money we spend in Norway to help very few asylum seekers. It costs a lot of money for Norway to have asylum seekers, and for some of the money we can help more here.

"If the asylum seekers do not come to Norway, then we have more money to help in Sudan, Eritrea, Jordan, Lebanon. It's easier to help them here than helping them in Norway, was the message from Listhaug.

Want more support for border control

In the north, Sudan borders Libya, the country where, among other things, Amnesty International has alarmed that migrants and refugees are subjected to torture and assault on their journey to Mother Europe .

The head of Sudan police forces made it clear to VG that Sudan failed to stop migration north, from either Somalia, Eritrea, South Sudan or Nigeria, on its own.

"I would like Norway to lead all European countries to provide adequate support to Sudan to combat illegal migration. Support should be training and logistics, we need Sudanese police forces to take responsibility to guard the borders and stop illegal migration, "said General Hashim Osman Al-Hussain to VG.

Opposite Listhaug, he pointed out that border control posts to Sudan are few, compared to the large number of migrants and refugees who travel through the country.

- The migration comes from east, south and west, and sometimes it also comes from the north. Normally, the migrants who come to Sudan do not want any intention to stay in Sudan, but they use Sudan as a transit for migration, especially to Europe, Al-Hussain said in today's meeting.
