Greetings!

It is with great pleasure that I present the first Resource Guide of Summer Opportunities for Minority Undergraduate Students to you. The process has been somewhat long and stressful at times, demanding more of my time and attention that I ever thought necessary to complete the job. But, in recognizing the vast abundance of interesting and unique opportunities that present themselves to the undergraduate minority student, I felt compelled to finish and get this resource out.

Having participated in at least one summer research opportunity (Fogarty Minority International Research Training Program: HIV/AIDS Research in Trinidad & Tobago), I recognize the value and unparalleled learning that one can gain from such experiences. Thus, my desire to share what little knowledge I have with you, and hoping that you will be able to find an experience within these pages that intrigues you, and most importantly that you will have the opportunity to participate.

During the process, I realized that the opportunities presented here represent only a fraction of the amazing possibilities out there in the ìreal worldî, but, it is a start, and hopefully we will expand this book for the forthcoming issue in 2003. Please feel free to send me your comments or if you know of other opportunities not listed here, could you please pass it on? I can be reached at the following e-mail address: bocako@email.com.

Thank you for your interest!

Sincerely,

Caroline Kouassiaman

Description

This program was founded upon the basis that even amongst minorities, Native Americans remain the most significantly underrepresented in graduate and medical education. 10 participants are chosen each summer for an intensive program involving individualized research projects with faculty mentors (covering a wide range of interests), as well as further opportunities to explore the fields of medicine and biomedical research such as shadowing opportunities, shifts in the emergency room and first-hand operating room experience. In addition, extracurricular activities and trips are planned for program participants. Participants tend to come to the program with varied levels of research experience and differences in interest, so attempts are made by the sponsor to accommodate everyone. In sum, the mission of this project is: ìto find motivated Native people and encourage them to contribute their unique talented to providing care to our people, individually through medicine, or broadly through science. Eligibility Criteria

Description

Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a five-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study.

Part I: The IIPP established the Sophomore Summer Policy Institute (SSPI) at Clark Atlanta Universityís School of International Affairs and Development in 1995. Each year a new class of fellows begins the program at the eight-week SSPI. The course of study includes International Politics, Research Methods, U.S. Foreign Policy, International Business, Economics, and selected area studies. To the core curriculum components CAU adds a ìwriting across the curriculumî element that evaluates fellowsí writing skills, then challenges them in every course to address weaknesses. Fellows are given a diagnostic exam when they arrive at the SSPI and before they depart. It measures skills ranging from geography, to economics, to world history. To assist fellows in putting into context what they learn at the SSPI, they travel to Washington, D.C. and New York for policy briefings on Capitol Hill, at the Department of State, the Foreign Service Institute, the United Nations, and Wall Street.

Part II
: Fellows may study for one or two semesters at an approved overseas institution. The IIPP provides funding for as much as one-half of the total cost of study abroad, with the unmet half being covered by a combination of government and institutional aid, as well as some reasonable family contribution.

Part III: As strong foreign language skills are essentially prerequisite to success in international affairs, the IIPP places great importance in language study for all fellows. Those without previously established language competency are required to participate in an intensive language-training program during the summer following their senior year. They are also required to enroll in foreign language courses at their home institutions to lay the foundation for a productive language training experience during the senior summer. Fellows are strongly encouraged to take up less commonly studied languages; and they have, by no means, confined themselves. Indeed, fellows are pursuing studies in Arabic, Wolof, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian.

For two years, fellows have enrolled in the summer language program at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Course offerings at Middlebury include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Those fellows interested in languages not offered at Middlebury receive assistance in identifying alternative programs. IIPP covers the costs of travel to and from the SLI, tuition, room and board, and a modest stipend.

Part IV: Fellows attend the Junior Summer Policy Institute (JSPI) during the summer following the junior year. The JSPIs are designed to do the following: 1) to prepare students for the rigor of graduate programs in international affairs through an intensive program of skills assessment and development in policy analysis, quantitative and communication skills; 2) to provide graduate schools with insight into how individual fellows are likely to perform at the graduate level; and 3) to assist fellows in their preparation for the graduate school application process.

Part V: Fellows who have established language competency participate in a summer internship experience in lieu of intensive language training during the summer following the senior year. For some who opt to defer graduate school for one year, the internship may span the fall and spring semesters as well, providing valuable job experience that strengthens graduate school applications and bolsters professional credentials. There is a wide range of placements available, including, among many others, the U.S. Department of State, the Arms Control and Foreign Policy Caucus, Africare, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Korea Economic Institute of America. While many internship opportunities are at U.S.-based international affairs agencies and organizations, there are overseas internship opportunities as well. IIPP provides a modest cost of living stipend.

Part VI: Fellows who successfully complete each component of their respective fellowship sequences are eligible to receive graduate fellowship assistance for a masters degree in an international affairs-related field. Institutional members of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), as partners in the IIPP effort, provide matching fellowship support as available.

Housing

Fellows pay for their travel to and from the SSPI. IIPP covers the costs of tuition, books, site visits, room and board, and a modest stipend.
