No Global South exceptionalism

Editor's note

The coronavirus story began in China but then rapidly shifted to Italy, Spain, France, the UK and the US. These countries have had the lion’s share of cases and of deaths, so it’s not surprising that the news media has largely focused its attention on them. So what about the rest of the world?

The Global South has not escaped the devastating impact of the virus, says Oxford epidemiologist David Hunter. In many countries deaths are following the same patterns seen in western Europe and the US a few weeks earlier. We can only hope that the shared experience of an epidemic will make those in the West more empathetic towards their counterparts in the global south.
