The Sudanese government has signed an agreement with its Russian counterpart to search for natural gas in the territorial waters of the Red Sea.

Oil Minister Azhari Abdul Qadir said the government had taken steps to facilitate investment in exploration  in the Red Sea.

Abdul Qadir pointed to similar steps taken in the central, northern and southern areas and the construction of an oil refinery in Port Sudan.

The agreement signed by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, Bakhit Ahmad Abdullah, and the head of the Russian institution “Russ Geology” Sergey Banov.

Russian Minister of Minerals and Natural Resources Dimitry Kaplkin confirmed the desire of Russian companies to work in the Sudan, according to studies prepared by Russian experts.

After lifting US sanctions in October, the government signed partnerships with many countries like Turkey to explore traditional energy sources.

On Monday, Kaplkin met President Omar AL-Bashir as part of his visit to the country which ends on Tuesday.
