COLUMBUS (WCMH) -- Three people were killed and one critically injured after a stabbing in north Columbus. The suspect was shot and killed by responding police officers.

It happened just after 9:00am Monday in the 4300 block of Walford Street.

Police tell NBC4 officers were called to a home at that location on a report of a stabbing. The officers entered the residence and found three people stabbed inside. Two of the female victims were pronounced dead at a local hospital. A third stabbing victim was listed in stable condition at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Witnesses say the officers confronted a man with a knife outside of the residence. Police tell NBC4 the officers on scene were ultimately forced to shoot him. The male suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

No officers were injured.

As part of the investigation on Walford, officers went to an address on Fitzroy nearby where they discovered another body. Officers say the male victim had died from apparent stab wounds.

The investigation is ongoing.

Essa Sanuwo, a resident of the Wolford Street apartment complex, says the suspect had seemed unstable for a while. “I think this guys been having trouble for a long time,” Sanuwo said. “It’s not only today they have a problem.”

Residents of the complex are mostly immigrants from the African country of Eritrea. Some of the women in the complex tell NBC4 there had been an ongoing problem of domestic violence in the apartment.

In addition to the three stabbing victims from the apartment, officers found two infant children inside. They were unharmed.

The scene was distressing to residents but police Sgt. Dean Worthington said this is not indicative of a wider problem in the neighborhood. “This seems to be an isolated incident. We’re looking at it as more of a domestic issue than a community issue.”

Police are attempting to identify the suspect and all of the victims. Columbus Police Critical Incident Response Team continues with the investigation.

This is the fifth police-involved shooting in Columbus in 2018.
