Global Tour Event Celebrates Multiculturalism In NL

March 22, 2018

Close to 30 unique cultures from around the world were represented at a showcase event hosted by the Association for New Canadians as part of Multiculturalism Week.

Director of Language Services with the Association, Jim Murphy says the Global Tour event is an annual fair that helps new Canadians to feel more settled.

He stresses the importance of feeling a sense of belonging and being able to share one’s cultural history and traditional practices.

St. Pius X Parish Hall was overflowing with music, food, vibrant dress, traditional objects and hundreds curious people learning about one another.

24-year-old Hannah Yakob moved to St. John’s three years ago to escape war that broke out in her home country of Eritrea.

She says things are very different in Canada however she still feels right at home in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Yakob says she really like it here and enjoys the friendly people. She says it has become her second home and admits she plans to stay in NL permanently.
