Cross Country: Samuel Fitwi is German U23 champion

Ohrdruf. Athlete Samuel Fitwi from the LG Vulkaneifel won the German Cross Championship in Ohrdruf, Thuringia, on Saturday in the category U23.

As the German Athletics Association announced on Saturday on its website, he took on the U23 route over 7.6 kilometers the gold medal. In the previous year he had to go out of competition because he did not have German citizenship. "The fact that it has now worked with the title is all the more beautiful," the association quoted the Crossmeister.

The native Eritrean Samuel Fitwi had also won in the Volksfreund athlete's election , the first place in the category of junior athletes. Thanks to a new personal best, he is already the tenth-fastest runner of a club from the athletics association over 5000 meters. He became Rhineland-Palatinate champion over 1500 meters. At the New Year's Eve run he made it as the third runner of a club from the region in the course of the aces in the top ten.

The juniors U23 have to assert themselves on 7,6km of the deep track. At the beginning, Jonas Hoffmann takes the lead, followed by Samuel Fitwi Sibhatu. But right after the first lap, Lukas Eisele takes the lead and makes pace for Samuel Fitwi Sibhatu who was able to significantly lower in the further course of the race and became German champion. Third was Jens Mergenthaler.
