First the Malta 'no' to the rescue: "We have no means". Sighted by the Mare Jonio ship of the Mediterranean project
Rome, October 13, 2018 - They arrived at three in the morning in Lampedusa the 70 migrants , from Eritrea, Syria and Ghana, spotted last night about 18 miles off the coast from the ship Ionian Sea in the Mediterranean project. To save them, with an 'event will', were the men of the port of Lampedusa who intercepted them, while they were on a boat in failure, less than five miles from the island. Migrants, mostly minors and women, arrived in good physical condition. Immediately visited on the pier by doctor Pietro Bartolo (the doctor of migrants), they were then accompanied inside the reception center hot spotisland.
On board there were two children , arrived in good condition with their respective mothers, both at a young age. The crossing, according to the first information, lasted over 35 hours. The boat used by the migrants was about eight meters long, had an almost flat bottom and a low waterline; of Egyptian construction, was a type of boat unsuitable to make the route from Libya to the Sicilian coast and too small for 70 people. Only thanks to the good conditions of the sea of the last 48 hours, there has not yet been another tragedy.
According to sources on board the Ionian, the Maltese authorities have given the news of the failure but have made it known that they have no means to rescue the boat. "Malta and Italy do not intervene", initially wrote Italian secretary Nicola Fratoianni in a tweet that immediately became viral.
