Remains of turtle shells and horns of six different individuals of a giant buffalo similar to the bull of Buia ( Bos buiaensis ) or its ancestor, Olduvai buffalo ( Pelorovis oldowayensis ) have emerged .

There have also been abundant remains of Acheulian lithic industry in large format and fauna of large vertebrates such as hippos ( Hippopotamus cf. gorgops ), two species of pigs ( Metridichoerus modestus and Kolpochoerus majus ), antelopes, monkeys, crocodiles and turtles.

In general, it can be said that the entire record corresponds to an early Acheulean age , in a chronology of between 1.5 and one million years old.

The campaign has applied new dating methodologies based on the ESR (Electronic Magnetic Resonance) technique and progress has been made in the geological cartography of the basin.

The team

The Eritrean-Spanish team has been directed by Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro , ICREA professor (Catalan Institute of Research and Advanced Studies); Eudald Carbonell , professor of Prehistory at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and Tsegai Medin , researcher at the Eritrean Commission of Culture and Sports (ECCS).

All of them are attached to the IPHES and other specialists linked to the National Center for Research in Human Evolution-CENIEH (Burgos), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the National Museum of Eritrea (NME) and the Eritrean Commission have also participated. of Culture and Sports.

In addition, a collaboration plan has been initiated for the realization of wells and water potabilization that improve the quality of life of the local population with the cooperators Pedro Verzier, of Talantia Start Up and the expert in the purification of water José Manuel Vílchez.

All these works are authorized by the Eritrea Commission of Culture and Sports and are financed by the Palarq Foundation through a project funded by the Atapuerca Foundation, with the logistical support of the National Museum of Eritrea. EFE
