1. A two day Partners Conference, held here in Asmara from November
2-3, discussing the national economic policy framework and programs for
the years 1999-2001 is scheduled to conclude today. The conference, held
in Asmara for the first time, reviewed the experience and performance of
the Eritrean economy over the past seven years and examined medium term
investment for the future and development plans for the next three
years. Participants in the conference included several international
organizations, notably the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund,
the European Union, the African Development Bank, the IFC, and the
bilateral development partnership for North America, Europe and Asia.
Participating nations included Italy, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden,
France, Canada, Japan and the US.
Eritrean economic advisor Dr. Woldai Futur said of the conference, "This
was not a pledging conference but rather a forum for the free flow of
ideas between Eritrea and its development partners. The government had
circulated, well in advance, the National Economic Policy Framework and
Program for 1999-2001. This document basically articulates the policy
and economic management strategy design to achieve rapid growth of the
Eritrean economy. The discussion between the Eritrean government and its
development partners was extensive, frank and open. The document used
for organizing the meeting was well received as realistic and
appropriate for guiding the Eritrean economy and for mobilizing both
internal and external resources for the implementation of the medium
term program."
