INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE COMMEMORATING
THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF ERITREA
JULY 22-26, 2001
Asmara, Eritrea
Introduction
The year 2001 marks the 10th anniversary of Eritrea's liberation and independence. In those ten years, independent Eritrea has registered accomplishments in many socio-political and economic areas, but also faced some challenges, including the recent major conflict with Ethiopia.
The proposed International Conference in Eritrea on the 10th Anniversary of Eritrea's Independence is intended to assess Eritrea's overall experience and development in the past ten years, and map out future opportunities and challenges.
The leading sponsors of the Conference are the Eritrean Studies Association (ESA), the University of Asmara, and the Research and Documentation Center (RDC) in Asmara. However, we desire the conference to be a truly international endeavor of both Eritrean and non-Eritrean organizations. To that end, we encourage and welcome the involvement and full participation of additional organizations.
Thematic Topics
In order to give the widest possible coverage of topics and opportunities for individual scholars, the contextual reach of the Conference is made as comprehensive as possible for the allotted time. Overall, the following seven thematic topics have been identified:
1. Cultural, Social and Political History of Eritrea
2. From Economic Survival to Sustainable Growth
3. Constitutionalism and Governance
4. State-to-State Relations and Regional Cooperation
5. Social Amenities in the Context of Gender, Geographic, and other Diversities
6. Democracy, Unity, and Civil & Political Rights in the Context of Diversity
7. Eritrea's Infrastructure and Development in the Face of Global Technological Growth
Each theme will have its own Program and Content Committee. An individual with the scholarship background on and/or expertise in the subject area of the thematic topic will be identified to serve the Chair of each thematic committee. The Committee, under the leadership of the Chair, will be responsible for the reviewing and proof reading of papers for scholarly content and integrity and to present them for pre-publication on a timely basis.
The seven Chairs of the thematic topics will collectively comprise the Program and Content Review Committee of the Conference, to be coordinated by the overall Planning and Coordination Committee (see below).
Additional Conference Committees
In Addition to the above-described thematic topic committees, the Conference will have the following committees
1. Fund Raising
