Greetings ESA Members and Friends,
As the beginning of the fall semester sets in, it is
once again time for the ESA to think about this year's
annual meeting, the Fall 2000 Newsletter, and events
for the coming year. As most of you have heard, the
Festival 2000 in Washington DC was a great success;
The ESA Steering Committee for the first international
Eritrean Studies Asmara Conference was able to meet
and determine a target date for the conference. At
this point, the conference is expected to be held in
Asmara in late July or early August of 2001. Members
will be kept abreast as the planning of the conference
develops.
The annual ESA meeting will also occur this November
in Nashville, Tennessee, coinciding with the annual
African Studies Association conference, scheduled for
November 16-19. The preliminary program for ASA can be
viewed at http://www.africanstudies.org. As usual, we
can expect many fine papers presented about Eritrea.
Members will be notified about the exact date, time,
and location of the annual ESA Meeting.
As the annual meeting approaches, it is also time to
work together on the Fall 2000 Newsletter. Members are
urged to send descriptions of their latest Eritrean
studies activities, new publications by themselves or
others (in any language), and any other relevant news
to be included in the newsletter. We especially
encourage members who have not previously submitted
news about themselves to do so. We also welcome short
articles from members about various Eritrean studies
related items. If you are unsure on the status of your
membership, please check with the ESA Treasurer,
Ghidewon Abay Asmerom, <ghidewon@vcu.edu>. All
submissions for the newsletter should be sent to the
ESA Secretary, Tricia Redeker Hepner,
<redekert@msu.edu>.
Wishing you all the best,
ESA
