Beer-Sheva, Israel,
June 4-7, 2000
Second Announcement
The Center for Water Science and Technology and the Blaustein
Institute for Desert Research, both of the Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev, announce an international conference on
"WATER AND ENVIRONMENT:
RESOLVING CONFLICTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DRYLANDS"
The conference marks the 30th anniversary of the University and is
scheduled to begin on the World Environment Day, June 5th, 2000.
The theme of the conference was chosen to underline the accelerated
development of drylands by urban, industrial, agricultural expansion
and recreational activities, which impinges on water resources and, as
a result, on the natural environment of these areas. Both depletion
and excess of water in the desert environment affect the ecological
system in general, and the quality of water resources in particular.
Contamination of water resources and environmental stress are a direct
consequence of the development of drylands unless appropriate
abatement mechanisms are embedded into the development process.
The objectives of the conference are to discuss these issues from a
multi-disciplinary perspective and to suggest means for resolving
water and environmental conflicts in the development of drylands
subject to economic constraints.
