Selam,
Thought some of you might be interested to know about the
expedition. Marco Pedulli is the current Head of Department
(Marine Biology & Fisheries) at the Univ of Asmara. He used
to be one of our brightest students when I was heading the same
department in the early 1990s. As a proud Eritrean, he has completed
the national service and training at Sawa.

Subject: [erimarine] Southern Red Sea Expedition
Dear Members,
A team of scientists from The University of Asmara, Department of Marine
Biology & Fisheries and The Marine Sciences Field Station at Massawa will
be aboard the first Southern Red Sea Expedition starting from the 18th of
this month. The Expedition which will last for seven days is principally
aimed at surveying the southern tip of the Eritrean Red Sea and collecting
baseline information from this rather under-researched area.
The team which will be composed of two Reef Fish Ecologists, two Coral
Ecologists, an Oceanographer, a Planktonologist, an Alagal Ecologist, a
Fisheries Expert and a technical assistant will work in close collaboration
with scientists from the Ministry of Fisheries based at Assab to address the
various aspects of the most important ecosytems in the area. Though, this
part of the Red Sea had prior visits from other scientists, such visits were
restricted to addressing only part of the ecosystem. In this rather
all-rounded expedition, therefore, an emphasis on the major biotic and
abiotic factors will be given.
The Expedition will be fully sponsored by the University of Asmara and at
this juncture we hereinafter extend our invitation to all interested people
to either contribute or even join in the expedition and make it successful.
The report of the expedition will be published and made accessible to
users early next year.
Any comments and suggestions by anyone interested in the expedition and its
objectives thereby are highly welcome and could be sent to the team via its
leader.
Thanks
Marco Pedulli, Expedition Leader
