FWP sets meeting on exotic species

| Posted: Saturday, December 26, 2009 11:30 pm | No Comments Posted

Should the Eritrea clawed frog, Cameroon volcano frog and the hermit crab be
allowed admission to Montana?

That’s the issue before the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission at a
public hearing on Jan. 14.

The exotic species would be allowed under a proposed change to the state’s
rule, allowing them to be sold or owned as pets in the state. The hearing is
at 6 p.m. at FWP headquarters in Helena, 1420 E. Sixth Ave.

By law the agency is required to classify exotic species as controlled,
noncontrolled or prohibited and to manage any permitting. The import,
possession and sale of exotic species are regulated in order to minimize the
potential health and safety risks that these species may present to humans,
wildlife, livestock and agriculture.

Public comment on the proposed rule changes must be made by Jan. 21 by
e-mail to: fwpexotics@mt.gov or in writing to Montana Fish, Wildlife and
Parks, Attn: Exotic Species, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT, 59620-0701.
