Humanitarian aid for Eritrea to combat child malnutrition
   Rome 21 December 2009

The serious, continuing food crisis affecting Eritrea has prompted Foreign
Minister Franco Frattini to issue instructions for an emergency humanitarian
aid initiative to help the Eritrean people. The crisis is affecting the most
vulnerable sections of the population, such as children, particularly hard.

To respond to this grave crisis, the Directorate General for Development
Cooperation will make a contribution of 530,000 euros to UNICEF.

This funding is intended to provide food assistance to over 100,00 children
aged 6 months to 5 years. The aim is to help reduce serious malnutrition,
reduce the mortality rate and lessen the risk of epidemics. The 6-month
programme run by UNICEF in agreement with the World Health Organisation and
Eritrea’s Ministry of Health envisages the distribution of vitamin- and
mineral-enriched cereals (UNIMIX) to children living in the Anseba, Gash
Barka and southern Red Sea regions.
