Eritrea crush Somalia as Rwanda pip Zims

Sunday, 6th December 2009

By Standard Reporters

Eritrea thrashed Somali 3-1 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the
Orange Senior Challenge Cup at the Nairobi City Stadium.

The Horn of Africa team snatched the opener via marksman Isaias
Andberhian through a spot kick in the 25th minute.

Two minutes later, Filmon Tseqay converted a cross from Yonatan Goitum,
putting Eritrea two goals ahead of Mogadishu boys.

Eritrean team dominated the match throughout the first half, pacing
Somalis too hard that they looked confused and their presence could not
be noticed in the pitch.

The latter resorted to rough and defensive game that proved futile in
the entire first half.

Somalis resumed the second half on a high pace, but luck was not on
their side as one of their own, Yassin Ali Egal, scored an own goal
while trying to clear off a left flank cross from Mehari Shinash in the
60th minute.

Eritrea, leading with three goals, did not deter the resilient opponents
to soldier on.

Dominated defence

Even though they were sure at that point of going nowhere, they fought
hard and got a single goal through Mohamed Hassan in the 70th minute.

>From then, Somalia put Eritrea on their defence as they dominated their
territory.

Somali striker Adil Akul made several attempts, but they were thwarted
by goalkeeper Yosief Seriatsion.

At Nyayo National Stadium, a 20th minute goal by Yusuf Ndayashimiye was
all Rwanda needed to beat Zimbabwe 1-0 and qualify for the
quarter-finals as Pool A winners.

The match was evenly-contested with both Rwanda and Zimbabwe attacking
and counter-attacking.

Zimbabwe needed to win the match to qualify for the quarter-finals, but
things did not work their way as Rwanda successfully defended their goal
to the last minute.

Rwanda and Eritrea thus qualified for the quarter-finals from Pool B,
while Zimbabwe were hoping to qualify as the best losers.
