Several Study Papers Presented At The Symposium Commemorating The 30th
Anniversary of the NCEW

Asmara, 22 November 2009: A number of study papers including "Labor Law to
Ensure Workers Rights from Eritrean Perspective", "Global Jobs Pact, The Way
Forward", "Eritrean Oral Poetry and Handcrafts" and others were presented at
the international symposium currently underway at the Asmara Palace Hotel in
commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the NCEW.
In the paper he presented titled " Economic Development and Challenges: The
Eritrean Experience, Political Challenges and Prospects in the Region", Mr.
Yemane Gebreab, Head of Political Affairs at PFDJ, indicated that the
present political and socio-economic experience in Eritrea is a continuation
of similar experience accumulated during the armed struggle. Pointing out
that the afore-mentioned experience is of limited period of time, Mr. Yemane
stated that Eritrea has a long way ahead in this case.
The fact that the EPLF strove to turn Eritrea's ethnic diversity into a
blessing rather than a curse as is the case in many countries through
cultivating a participatory political system and organizing all Eritrean
communities under one united force was not aimed at achieving independence
only but also secure social and cultural transformation, he clarified.

Mr. Yemane went on to explain that the lack of any regional or international
support to the Eritrean people's struggle while global superpowers stood by
colonial oppressors enabled the Eritrean people to depend solely on their
own resources. "Although the Eritrean people had to wage a struggle for a
long period of time that claimed the lives of thousands, they ultimately
proved their enduring principle of self-reliance is a basis for independence
and unity," he added. Mr.

extensive briefings as regards the Eritrean government's efforts towards the
achievement of peace and stability in the region.

Director General of the Labor Department at the Ministry of Labor and Human
Welfare, Mr. Woldeyesus Elisa, on his part said that labor laws were first
introduced in Eritrea during the Italian colonial period although they were
largely ineffective in addressing Eritrean workers' demands and rights. In
the study paper titled "Labor Law to Ensure Workers Rights from Eritrean
Perspective", Mr. Woldeyesus went on to point out that the issue of workers'
rights has been given due attention since the days of liberation struggle
and the Eritrean government continues to exert efforts in this case by
adopting different articles from the ILO.

Furthermore, Mr. Solomon Tsehaye, Head of Cultural Affairs at the Ministry
of Education presented a paper titled "Eritrean Oral Poetry and
Handcrafts," in which he underscored the importance of the role of artists
in social development and industrial progress.
A study paper under the heading "Global Job Pact, The Way Forward" was also
presented by Mr. Francis Atwoli, President of COTU-Kenya.
Meanwhile, adding further color to the commemorative events, an exhibition
reflecting the past and present activities of the NCEW was opened at the
Expo Hall by the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Mr.
Woldemichael Abraha and a cultural show was staged by troupes from North
America, Europe, Middle East and Sudan at the Municipality Hall.
