The YPFDJ-Atlanta chapter successfully hosted its first College/Career
Preparation Workshop on November 14, 2009 at the Eritrean Community Center
of Georgia. The goal of the workshop was to provide the students with
useful information that would help them in their college and career-track
decision-making process, and give them an opportunity to interact with
positive, Eritrean role models from different fields who could provide
guidance on how to excel academically and professionally.

The event was a tremendous success with approximately twenty high school
juniors, seniors and recent high school graduates in attendance, as well as
some of their parents. The participants of the workshop were provided with
folders of information about a range of college-related topics including SAT
preparation, the college application process, writing personal essays, and
sources of financial aid, scholarships and grants.

The format of the program was a lively, interactive discussion between the
workshop leaders and the participants, but more importantly among the
participants themselves as they shared their knowledge and experiences with
their peers. The students enthusiastically answered trivia questions with
the hope of winning a prize, and managed to learn new and interesting facts
in the process. The career portion of the workshop covered a broad array of
careers including Engineering, IT, Law, Finance, Accounting, Education, City
Planning and Business Ownership. Several Eritrean professionals shared
their educational and professional background with the group, and then spent
time answering the myriad of questions from the students eager to learn.

The attendees were given the opportunity to fill out an anonymous evaluation
form at the end of the workshop. One of the students stated that it helped
him/her with “planning the future” while another stated that the workshop
was “very informative.” A number of the students echoed those sentiments
and acknowledged that the workshop was helpful to them in many regards.

YPFDJ-Atlanta would like to thank the participants of the workshop for being
exceptionally receptive by listening and asking questions about the
information that was being provided to them, and also for sharing their
experiences with others in the group. We would also like to thank the
Hidri-Parental Advisory Committee (H-PAC) for their continued support of
programs such as these. Our ultimate goal is for the youth in our community
to succeed and excel in whatever arena of life they choose, and we hope we
can play a small role in helping them do so.
