* Each year, Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett pays
tribute to individuals and organizations that have made a difference in the
lives of the County’s residents through their efforts in the arts and
humanities. The**County Executive's Awards for Excellence in the Arts and
Humanities**are the most prestigious honors conferred by the County on
individual artists, organizations and patrons of the arts and humanities.
The public is invited to nominate a person or group to receive an
award. Montgomery County, Maryland is located just outside of Washington D.C
and is known to be one of the best counties in the United States in many
sectors including education. Award recipients receive their awards at a
special ceremony held at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.
Included on the program are performances by local arts organizations and
recognition of all the individuals and organizations that have received
grants for that year from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery
County. *
* It is a pleasure to announce and recognize two award winners who have
been a family to the Eritrean community in the metro D.C area. If most of
you recall a couple of years ago at the Montgomery County library located in
Wheaton for a whole week there was a display of the Eritrean flag along with
other cultural displays which ended up in a festive evening at the library
with the metro D.C area community attending and displaying the beautiful
Eritrean culture to our guests. *
* Ari Brooks Woldeab is the executive director of the friends of the
Library Montgomery County and the person who was kind enough to work with
the community to further educate people about the beautiful country of
Eritrea. This was one of her deeds alongside of her other excellent work to
promote literacy in general and help educate people through her work at
Friends of the library. Let's all congratulate Ari for a great award. Her
Husband Alazar Woldeab is also a member of the Eritrean community at large
and is very active in helping to advocate for Eritrea. Ari was awarded the
emerging leader award for her excellent work at Friends of the Library,
Montgomery County.*
* Michael Piechocinski as most of you recall is an artist who has
displayed his beautiful work at the Eritrean festival a few years ago. His
art work and his exhibits in Eritrea were very popular. He even had an
exhibit of the Eritrean art at a gallery in Georgetown. It was a great
evening where many observers were able to learn about the nation of Eritrea
by looking at the incredible art displays featuring the Eritrean beauty and
culture. Mr. Piechocinski teaches art at the visual arts center at the
Albert Einestien high school also in Montgomery County and his award along
with a colleague was for Education. His wife also an Eritrean works closely
with members of the Eritrean community to promote the beauty and culture of
Eritrea.*
* The fact that these two family members of the Eritrean community were
getting these awards at the same time was a coincidence and exciting at the
same time. It was revealed that when the information about Ari came out the
website link showed that Mr. Piechocinski was also an award recipient. For
