Reports on Eritrea were political, skewed and biased

Posted Saturday, August 27 2011 at 20:08

I am an Eritrean residing in Nairobi and have read the previous two
issues of The EastAfrican (Issues 876 and 877) with surprise. The
content was not only skewed and biased but was a political offensive
to defame and misrepresent Eritrea.

The sole aim of this campaign, it would appear, is to portray Eritrea
as the main problem in Somalia and the region while turning a blind
eye to the big fish working to disintegrate Somalia.

Eritrea’s position is that let the Somali issue be dealt with by the
Somalis themselves. Two, foreign intervention should stop. Instead,
back Somali initiatives — the only solution that can bring peace and
stability in Somalia.

In my opinion, the Transitional Federal Government will not bring a
lasting solution to Somalia as it lacks the support of the people and
does not represent Somalia; Somalia is not about Mogadishu only. What
about Somaliland and Puntland?

When Eritrea pushes for the reconstruction of Somalia, it means
Somaliland (North) and Somalia (Somalia including Puntland), it does
not mean the so-called five stars.

Eritrea abides by the UN and African charters and believes that
boundaries of all countries should be based on these charters. Neither
the Eritrea government nor the president had included eastern Kenya,
Ogaden or Djibouti as part of Somalia.

Who is distorting and interpreting the facts on the ground in such a
manner? For what purpose?

I urge The EastAfrican to look at the credibility of its sources
afresh and report the truth to the East African Community and beyond.

Indeed, it is Ethiopia which has defied the UN Border 2002 Ruling and
continues to occupy Eritrea territory. In this particular issue, where
is the rule of law and where as the guarantors of this agreement? Have
you reported on this issue yet it is the main issue destabilising the
Horn?
