Darfur peace agreement to be signed in Doha today

*QNA/Doha*
A peace agreement will be signed in Doha today between the Justice and
Liberation Movement (LJM) and the Sudanese government, aiming to bring peace
to the troubled region of Darfur.

Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir, Eritrean President Isaias
Afewerki, Chadian President Idriss Deby and Prime Minister of the Central
African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadera, arrived in Doha yesterday to
take part in the agreement signing ceremony.

The Sudanese president was welcomed upon arrival at Doha International
Airport by HE the Minister of Social Affairs and Acting Minister of Labour,
Nasser bin Abdullah al-Hemaidi, adviser to the Sudanese president who is
also in charge of Darfur Issue, Dr Ghazi Salahuddin, Minister of State at
the Sudanese Presidency and Head of the government negotiating delegation,
Dr Amin Hassan Omar, Qatar’s Ambassador to Sudan Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi
and Charge d’Affaires at the Sudanese embassy in Doha Abdul Azim al-Karouri.

The Eritrean president was received upon arrival by HE the Minister of
Social Affairs and Acting Minister of Labour.

Chadian President Idriss Deby was received by HE the Minister of State for
Cabinet Affairs Nasser bin Mohamed bin Abdul Aziz al-Thani and Chad’s
Ambassador to Qatar, Tahir Annadif Khatir.

The prime minister of the Central African Republic was welcomed by the
Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Charge d’Affaires at Central African
Republic’s embassy in Doha Hamoudi al-Sheikh.

Separately, HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmad bin Abdullah
al-Mahmoud yesterday met Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Joint African
Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur and head of the AU-UN
mission in Darfur (UNAMID), who is in Qatar to take part in the signing
ceremony of the peace agreement.

Talks during the meeting covered preparations for the ceremony and the
mediation’s plan to complete the Darfur peace process.
Professor Gambari promised that the UNAMID would exert all possible efforts
in order to accomplish the peace process and resolve the conflict in Darfur.

The meeting was attended by several Foreign Ministry officials.

LJM top negotiator, Tadjadine Beshir Niam, has confirmed that “the
Liberation and Justice Movement will sign a peace agreement with the
government on Thursday 14 July”.

He also called on the other rebel groups to join the agreement stressing
that despite the differences “we all aim to achieve peace, justice and the
welfare of Darfur people”, according to Sudan Tribune.
