The Djibouti government has assured Somali officials it will send troops to
Somalia as soon as possible.

Somalia's Minister of Information, Abdikarim Hassan Jama, announced the
decision after returning from the Inter-Governmental Authority of
Development (IGADD) summit in Addis Ababa.

In a press conference in Mogadishu on Tuesday, the minister said, "Djibouti
government [has] show[n] its willingness to send its troops to engage the
peacekeeping mission and that is a good brotherly step to boost restore
security in the country."

"The Somali government is happy and welcomes the move by the government of
Djibouti," he added.

Up to 12,000 African Union peacekeeping forces, mostly from Uganda and
Burundi, are currently deployed in Mogadishu backing the fragile
Transitional Federal Government forces for their fight against Islamic
insurgents of Al-Shabaab attempting to oust the government .

Last month, the Djibouti government said that it would send 450 troops to
Somalia, probably at the end of June or early July, but did not specify the
time frame.

A week ago, Uganda deployed 3,000 troops, which raised the number of AMISOM
troops on the ground to 12,000.

In May, Al-Shabaab warned Djibouti against deploying it troops in Somalia,
vowing they would be attacked.

TFG forces backed by AMISOM and the pro-government Sufi militia of Ahlu
Sunna Wal Jama'a forces have achieved gains in recent offensives against
Al-Shabaab, taking back key positions in Mogadishu as well as southern
regions, and have besieged the Bakaara market, the militants' stronghold and
main source of its funds.
