Press Statement: Eritreans in United Kingdom Launch "30 Days of Action for Eritrea"
On November 21st 2010, the Eritrean Community Campaign Committee (ECCC), representatives of Eritrean community organisations in London, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester conducted a successful meeting in London. The meeting focused on the unfair and illegal sanctions that the UN Security Council imposed on Eritrea. They also discussed developments and achievements back home, the prevailing diplomatic situation and the resolute rebuff of Eritreans in the Diaspora against the resolution. It was also noted that 23rd of December will mark the first anniversary of the passing of the illegal, unfair and unjust US sponsored Resolution 1907 (2009) against the backdrop that a year later, the Security Council has yet to provide concrete evidence to prove its allegations against Eritrea.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Hailu Embaye, Secretary of ECCC. On the occasion, the Guest of honor, H.E. Tesfamicael Gerahtu, Eritrean Ambassador to United Kingdom & Ireland, was invited to give a briefing on UNSC resolution 1907, the prevailing situation and developments since it was passed in December 2009. This was put into context by elaborating the tremendous developmental achievements and the endeavors taken in national capacity building in Eritrea. Furthermore, he also praised the commendable participation and contribution of Eritreans in the Diaspora. The Ambassador encouraged Eritreans to maximize their effort of participation and contribution in the national developmental campaign. He also stressed on the need to build strong communities, focusing on how to promote, strengthen and secure the social welfare of Eritrean society in the UK, with an ultimate aim of consolidating integration. More emphasis was given where every Eritrean has to work hard and play a role to show his presence and have influence in all spheres of life in the UK. Ambassador Gerahtu also responded to questions presented by participants at the meeting.
Participants once again unequivocally condemned the unjust and illegal action of the UN and decided to be an integral part of the world-wide Action Month organised to mark the first year anniversary of the imposed sanction. They also called on every individual and various Eritrean community and civic organisations in the UK to take action in the next 30 days from 20th November to 20th December 2010. The participants further stressed that the Action Month will show once again the resolve of Eritreans to defend their country and support the Government by sending an unwavering message to the peace loving world that Eritrea is determined for peace, security, stability and development. The campaign will be led by the Eritrean youth all over the world.
It is with this usual defiant spirit and energy that the participants successfully finalized and officially declared an action plan for the campaign. Under the finalized programme, the first action is to write a petition to President Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, including members of the UN Security Council, to call for the immediate and unconditional annulment of the illegal, unfair and unjust sanctions. In every respect the Action month will call upon President Barack Obama and UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon to uphold the UN charter and the international law by taking action to annul and repeal sanctions against Eritrea. An Action day will also be organized on 15th December 2010, whereby various activities will take place to consolidate the campaign.
