International Crisis Group: Creator of Phantom Crises
By Ogbazgy Abbay Asmerom
PART I
Guana mefres quana. .. .”An alien destroys the walls of the porch” ...
Tigrigna expression.
The writer heard this expression when he was very young. Now, it makes some
sense to realize its meaning, especially when you read what an enemy of the
people writes something full of garbage and worthless that is intended to
destroy the walls of a country!

It is befitting to speak and write in this article about the evil intentions
and despicable acts of International Crisis Group [hereafter ICG]. Its name
shows it stands for a crisis, not for a solution!

Eritrea has made an incredible progress in 20 years of its independence.
This cannot be denied, unless the writers of ICG live in a tunnel where
there is no day light to help them see the difference between light and
darkness, good and bad, right and wrong, and then keep on living in a
fantasy world.

It is not surprising to note that most of the bad mouthing and
unsubstantiated complaints come from some of the urban dwellers where there
is an infestation of greed, jealousy, indolence, and rumors. Some of the
negative feedback and misinformation were also supplied by incompetent
nincompoops who live in the Diaspora and western capitals, who do not have
the desire to see a peaceful and prosperous Eritrea flourish. For these
people, there is no hope of returning to Eritrea to exploit the natural
resources of the country and appreciate the moral values of the people.

The ICG, based in Brussels, Belgium, professes to be “an independent,
non-profit, and non-governmental organization.” This is false! It is
incredible to believe in it! It depends on handouts from different
governments that have vested interests in fomenting crises in Third World
countries. The Group thrives on the funding of governmental agencies and
powers that keep it spewing garbage and dirt on societies that do not
resemble to the historical aberrations and dichotomies of Western Europe.
How did most of the European countries come to the stage where they are now?
What were France, Prussia, Austria, Russia, England, Italy, and Spain doing
to each other? Why did the Scandinavian countries separate from each other?
What did the Belgians do to the Congo? What did the Portuguese do to Angola
and Mozambique? What did the English do to Zimbabwe? What did the French do
to Algeria? What did the combined forces of European countries do to the
blacks in South Africa, especially when they were supporting the evil
Apartheid System? The list goes on and on!

ICG states it works through “field-based analysis and high-level advocacy”
to prevent conflicts. No! Again, this is an absurd approach! It has not done
any fieldwork in any rural parts of Eritrea! It has not visited the
countryside where the action is! Many societies in rural Eritrea used to
live a condition similar to the Stone Age! Thanks to the efforts of the
PFDJ, dedication of the Eritrean youth and people, this pattern is changing!
It will also continue to change.

ICG works to create deadly conflicts flourish in areas where people ought to
live in peace and harmony. ICG foments the creation of phantom crises in
Third World countries so that it continues to receive funds from its
sponsors who do not wish to see any progress in the lives of down trodden
societies.

The Group has hordes of so-called “political analysts” in areas where crises
are created, instigated, manufactured, maintained, and planned to be managed
by a remote control system and by various interest groups, where conflicts
are perpetrated and perpetuated for years. It believes it has a “Mount of
Opinions, Analysis, and Research Materials” that need to be disseminated!

On 5 November 2007, ICG published report No. 48, titled: Ethiopia and
Eritrea: Stopping the Slide To War. In less than a year, on 17 June 2008, it
also published another paper, No. 141, titled: Beyond the Fragile Peace
between Ethiopia And Eritrea: Averting New War. The two papers did not
produce what the editors and writers predicted! So far, there is a situation
of “No peace, no war’ in the Horn of Africa!

The latest edition on Eritrea: Eritrea: The Siege State, No. 163, issued on
21 September 2010, is real garbage, trash, junk, and rubbish, and does not
deserve to be read by anyone who knows what an enemy can do to an innocent
child. The 37-page report was designed to molest Eritrea and the Eritrean
people! The report focuses on causing intimidation, “psychological warfare,
and terrorism”, which are being declared on Eritrea and the Eritrean people.
ICG did not show any sense of responsibility, accountability, and
transparency in its publication! The report was designed to create a wedge
between the government and the people! It was also published to hoodwink,
bamboozle, deceive, and trick some gullible world leaders into believing in
everything that is written about Eritrea. Who can do this, except a serial
killer? Thus, the report cannot be trusted. It is inflammatory!

It must be noted that the ICG report is offensive, ugly, disgraceful, wrong,
and inappropriate to all peace-loving Eritreans. Hence, it must be condemned
in stronger terms and words. It must also be emphasized that the editors and
writers are "irresponsible individuals and black market traders and
mercenaries" who work to paint a black image of Africa and the Africans. It
is obvious to note that here is an enemy that uses a dirty brush to paint
with soot and then besmirch the natural beauty and image of the society!
Hence, ICG sought to tarnish the image of Eritrea! The editors, publishers,
or “analysts” of the ICG group issued a report that is full of childish
statements about Eritrea, its government, and people. Facts were not checked
for accuracy! Some were gleaned from questionable websites. The “editors”
have attempted to rape the Eritrean government and people! What do we expect
from rapists? Nothing! A guana yefres quana! An alien destroys the walls of
the porch!

Who are the writers of the report? Why did they write this report? When and
where from did they gather this rubbish? The answer is very clear! To be
frank and clear, ICG does not have any interest in the welfare of the
Eritrean people! ICG is hell-bent to distort the image of Eritrea, the
Eritrean government, and people! Writing from their ivory tower offices and
hidden bankers, they do not have the logical reasoning and critical thinking
to see the positive contributions of the Eritrean government and people to
the future progress of the society! Given the geopolitical condition of the
area, the Eritrean government is making undeniable changes and
transformations in the lives of ordinary Eritreans! Eritreans do know what
kind of living conditions they suffered under the Derge, the military rulers
of Ethiopia! No one whishes those days/years to come back!

Let us cite the following stats about the educational and health conditions
in Eritrea. According to the numbers given by Mr. Osman Saleh, the minister
of Foreign Affairs of Eritrea, in his presentation concerning the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), to the General Assembly of the UN, in New York
City, on 21 September 2010, Eritrea has made tremendous progress in the two
areas. Mr. Osman said, “I am pleased to report that remarkable progress has
been made in most areas of health during the last 15 years in Eritrea. The
under-five mortality, infant mortality, and maternal mortality rates have
declined between the two time intervals (1993-95 to 2010) by 53.7%, 41.7%
and 51.3%, respectively.

This progress in the health sector has come about as a result of the
government’s heavy investment, in collaboration with some partners, in the
construction of new health facilities, upgrading and rehabilitating of
existing facilities and the provision of equipment, drugs, and other
supplies. At present, 75% of the population has access to health care within
10 Km radius as opposed to 40% at the time of liberation in 1991.
Immunization coverage for the third dose of DPT and Hepatitis B to children
between 12 and 23 months is at over 90%. Eritrea is certified for
eliminating tetanus and being a polio-free country. HIV/AIDS prevalence was
estimated to be 2.4% in 2002. At the present time (2010), it is down at
0.7%, which is a 71.0% decrease in this killer disease.”

Mr. Osman continued and explained about the progress made in education. He
stated, “Upon Eritrea’s liberation in May of 1991, my Government placed
education among the list of top priorities for the country. Eritrea strongly
believes that education is core for the overall and sustainable development
of the nation. On this premise, my Government made education free to all
from primary to tertiary levels. In this connection, Eritrea has made
significant progress in rehabilitating and expanding the education sector in
the past 20 years. Two indicators, net primary school enrolment and literacy
rate of ages 15 to 24, have been used to monitor progress in education. The
indicators show that huge advances have been achieved in enrolment in
elementary school education. It rose from 30% in 1993-95 to 56.2% in 2010,
an increase of 87.3%. In the same period, it is commendable also to see
literacy rate of 15-24 years old reaching 85.2%.”
To be continued ..............
