Event Information
Flat, Fast and Festive!
"This was my first major running event. It was a more than amazing experience. From the fabulous volunteers providing constant support throughout the event to the last 500 metres where the spectators blew me away with their cheers."
The flat and fast features of this event (includes the marathon, half and 5k) have consistently been the reason for so many people reaching a personal best, qualifying for Boston, having a memorable but good first marathon or an outstanding one. Even power walkers or slower runners love this course because of its 6 hour 30 minute time limit.
The full and half marathon start on University Avenue just north of Adelaide Street and finish in the heart of downtown at City Hall, at Bay and Queen Street. They head out and back along the lakeshore on a flat course that Boston hopefuls and first-timers love. With Kenneth Mungara's 2:08:32, Toronto Waterfront was the 4th fastest marathon in North America in 2009, behind only Chicago, Houston and LA — 10 seconds faster than Boston and 43 seconds quicker than New York, the only other sub 2:10 marathons on the continent. It has been warded a prestigious IAAF Silver Label for 2008, 2009 and again for 2010. There are only 14 Gold and 15 Silver Label marathons in the world this year.
There are bands and Neighbourhood Entertainment Centres every 2 kilometres, cheerleaders, and numerous aid stations. Overall, there's a great, festive atmosphere. All marathoners and half marathoners get technical t-shirts and exciting finisher's medals (marathon & half) designed by Hasty Awards, who developed the world's first "spinner" for Miami Marathon.
Toronto Waterfront, however, is much more than just the run... it's a festive, full weekend that starts with gurus John Stanton and Coach Jenny Hadfield at the free 2-day Expo, Friday and Saturday. There's a Saturday morning (free) short International Friendship Run, hosted by the Running Room, a fun carbo load pasta dinner on Saturday night, and a post-race Victory party in Nathan Phillips Square from 9am to 3pm on Sunday. It's all part of an "unforgettable" Toronto experience!

The 2010 medals continue our Collectors' Series, featuring landmarks we run past. The design features the Princes' Gates at Exhibition Place — that marathoners and half-marathoners run by at 6km & 17km; and where the Waterfront 5K starts.
Often mistakenly called the "Princess Gates," the monumental Princes' Gates were officially opened by princes Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII), and George (later The Duke of Kent), on August 31, 1927, during that year's CNE. They were built to celebrate Canada's 60th anniversary of Confederation, and were originally to be called "The Diamond Jubilee of Confederation Gates" but the name was changed when it was found that the Princes were touring Canada the year of its dedication. First to pass through the gate was a Veterans Parade, a tradition that later became the annual Warriors' Day Parade.
The gates are made of a mix of stone and concrete. The statue at the top of the arch is the 'Goddess of Winged Victory', an interpretation of the original 'Goddess of Winged Victory of Samothrace', designed by architect Alfred Chapman of Chapman and Oxley, and carved by Charles McKechnie. In her hand she holds a single maple leaf. There are nine pillars to either side of the main arch, representing the nine Canadian provinces in existence at the time of construction. Flanking the central arch are various figures representing progress, industry, agriculture, arts and science. The gates were designed by Chapman & Oxley in Beaux-Arts style.
During the fall of 1986 the Winged Victory statue was taken down and found to be seriously deteriorating. It was subsequently replaced by a glass-reinforced polymer plastic copy in 1987, designed to withstand the elements for over a century. That same year the gates officially became a listed building under the Ontario Heritage Act.
