ZANZIBAR’S Karume Boys scored twice in the first quarter of the match to
beat guest side Yemen 2-1 in a Group B match of the Cecafa (Council of East
and Central Africa Football Associations) Under-20 tournament in Asmara,
Eritrea on Sunday.

Ali Badru was on target in the seventh minute before Ali Othman made it 2-0
in the 24th minute from a counter attack. Yemen dominated play but finding
the target remained a problem until the 57th minute when Aiman Al-Hagri
converted with a header.

Zanzibar played the final quarter hour a man less after Somalia referee Nur
Mohamed sent off Saleh Hamad for unsporting behaviour. Somalia and Sudan
played to a barren draw in a Group A match, also staged at the Asmara
Stadium Sunday.

Sudan dominated play but the Somali maintained a strong defensive play that
assured them of a point in this nine-team tournament. But Sudan were not
dampened by the result promising to play even better in their remaining
preliminary matches against Kenya (Tuesday), Eritrea (Thursday) and Tanzania
(Monday next week).

“Against Somalia we only needed a goal to get things right but it never came
and we dropped points,” said their deputy coach Saleem Salman at the post
match Press Conference.

His Somali counterpart Ismael Mohamed said his team was driven by the many
fans that rallied behind them. Action continued late yesterday with a Group
B match pitting defending champions Uganda against Rwanda from 5pm.

Today Mainland ‘Ngorongoro Heroes’ who lost their first match 1-0 to host
Eritrea, will have a date with Somalia in a lunch time kick off in Asmara.
The second match of the day will pit Kenya and Sudan.
