Kenya: PM Will Not Commit Troops To Somalia

Kenya will not commit troops to an expanded African Union (AU) force in
Somalia, but will leave the issue open for later review, Kenyan Prime
Minister Raila Odinga said July 30, CNN reported. Kenya is hesitant to
deploy troops to Somalia even under the auspices of the AU; because of the
two countries’ shared border, troop deployment could be construed as an
invasion, according to Odinga. Kenya may consider committing troops to
Somalia if other African nations announce similar commitments, Odinga added.
However, self-defense cannot be ruled out if Somali militants continue
cross-border raids, Odinga said.
