Tanzania: Confident Twiga Stars Arrive in Asmara

2 June 2010

?

Dar Es Salaam - CONFIDENT national women football team, Twiga Stars arrived in Asmara, Eritrea yesterday and players are in positive frame of mind ahead of the return leg tie of the African Women's Championship qualifiers against host tomorrow.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) spokesperson Florian Kaijage confirmed today that the team landed in Asmara safely and players were in good shape ready for the encounter.

"I talked to the team manager Furaha Francis this morning and he said everything was under control," said Kaijage.

The match will be played on Thursday and Twiga Stars' early departure is meant to enable the players to acclimatize with the high altitude weather in the horn-of-Africa nation.

The local queens were initially expected to train in altitude areas of Arusha, Mbeya or Iringa, which have almost similar climate as Asmara, but they reversed their decision and opted to go and train on the battle field.

Twiga Stars' head of delegation, Madina Mhando said on Monday that considering Asmara's 2,400 metres altitude and relatively mild temperatures, the players will need to adapt with the weather so that they are not affected when they take on their hosts.

The local queens are clear favourites to reach the CAF African Women's Championship finals set to take place in South Africa in October, after recording a mammoth 8-1 win over Eritrea in their first leg tie of the continental qualifiers.

The massive victory at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam some two weeks ago put Twiga Stars almost through and it certainly looks that their dream to make their first appearance in the African Women's Championship final is all but fulfilled.

Head coach Charles Boniface Mkwasa said the spirit and morale were high among his players and was equally confident that they will get the job done in Asmara and make the history by booking their place in the continental finals for the first time.
