Also during the occasion 30 students representing the 1,071 outstanding
students who scored GPAs of 3 and above in both academic years were handed
certificates and 3,000 Nakfa each by Mr. Semere Russom, the Minister of
Education.

Speaking during the award ceremony, Mr. Semere congratulated the students
and their families and noted that the female students who are increasingly
scoring excellent results deserve higher praise.

"The nation's largest assets are its students, and as such its biggest task
is nurturing them," he said.

Reiterating that they are still faced with harder efforts, the minister
wished them good luck on their future endeavors.

The ceremony was successfully concluded with all the students taking group
pictures with the President.

The event was marked by spectacular cultural performances by the National
Union of Eritrean Youth and Students' Wari Cultural Troupe, whose
entertaining show earned great admiration from the audience.

Ministers, senior PFDJ officials and other guests attended the prize
awarding ceremony.

It is to be recalled that 79 students in the 2007/2008 academic year and 117
in the following year scored full marks. Over 25% of these were females.
Moreover, a total of 1,071 students scored a grade point average of 3 and
above in both academic years.

The Zagre Award, which aims at encouraging students who demonstrated
academic excellence so that they may become role models for other students,
is being given for the 11th consecutive time.
