Fred Hallows Intraocular Lens Laboratory becoming competitive in the world

Asmara, 9 July 2009 - The Asmara-based Fred Hallows Intraocular Lens Laboratory has not only met domestic demand but is also becoming competitive in the world market, according to Mr. Mengisteab Tewoldeberhan, manager of the Laboratory.
Noting that the Fred Hallows Intraocular Lens Laboratory which is the first of its kind in Africa is giving top priority to treat Eritrean nationals suffering from cataract disease, he pointed out that 73% of its product is being exported to Asian countries and 21% to countries in Africa, Europe, Oceania and America.
Reports indicated that the Laboratory which was initially producing only 30,000 lenses in a year is presently producing about 200,000 lenses annually as a result of growing demand in the market.
Moreover, Mr. Mengisteab explained that the quality of the products undergoes experiment by various local and international quality control institutions, and that the product’s quality and effectiveness is making it competitive in the world market.
The Laboratory has produced two types of inter ocular lens and that over 1 million people in the planet have become beneficiaries of such products, the reports added.
Mr. Mengisteab went on to say that the Fred Hallows Intraocular Lens Laboratory has already introduced the necessary equipments and is offering training to staff members to produce advanced lenses. A study has also been finalized towards producing eye drop medicine.
The Fred Hallows Intraocular Lens Laboratory was set up by Prof. Fred Hollows who was a friend of Eritrea since the days of the armed struggle, and is currently administered under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health.
