Man charged with murder in wife’s death in Canada
EDMONTON — Police have charged a 52-year-old Edmonton man with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife on Sunday.
Detectives were first alerted to the death after Tesfai Negasi walked into police headquarters and allegedly said he killed his wife. An autopsy was finished Monday afternoon, and although the cause of death is being withheld as the investigation continues, police have released the name of the victim: Selamawit Negasi. She was 46.
Tesfai Negasi was also charged with offering an indignity to a body. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
Selamawit Negasi’s body was found at her home in the Mayliewan neighbourhood in Edmonton’s north end, at 7328 164th Ave. Neighbours described her as a quiet but friendly woman who would wave as she left to pick up her youngest daughter from kindergarten.
The couple’s daughters are being cared for by relatives.
Friends describe Tesfai Negasi as a fun-loving regular at La Dolce Vita Cafe and Bar in Little Italy. The Eritrean native is not a drinker, friends say, but likes to play cards and speaks five languages.
