Somali opposition reject peace deal

Tue, 28 Oct 2008 12:29:22 GMT

Two leading opposition groups in Somalia have rejected a peace agreement
signed between the government and some opposition figures.

According to a deal signed on Monday between the Transitional Federal
Government (TFG) and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia,
Ethiopian troops in Somalia will be replaced by a joint force comprising
of Somali troops, African Union (AU) peacekeepers and ARS security
forces.

The Ethiopian troops will pull out of Somali territories within 120
days, starting November 21, 2008.

The leader of an Eritrean-based opposition group, Sheikh Hassan Dahir
Aweys, said the deal has no value until 'the last Ethiopian soldier
crosses the Somali border', a Press TV correspondent in Somalia
reported.

The chairman of the Umbrella Organization of Islamic Clerics, Sheik Nur
Barood Gurhan, vowed on Monday to continue the fight against Ethiopian
soldiers inside Somalia.

"No opposition group should sign a deal with the government," he told
reporters after a meeting of the organization in Mogadishu.

In 2006, Ethiopia militarily intervened to help the embattled TFG. Ever
since, the country has been the scene of the troops' unceasing struggle
against the fighters of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) who had been
removed following the Ethiopian entry.

Earlier in the month, the Ethiopian Premier Meles Zenawi had said that
poor 'commitment' on the part of the Somali government would leave
Ethiopia no choice but to pull the forces out of Somalia.
