      Visiting delegate from EU Parliament commends Eritrea's efforts to achieve food security and expand social service

Mendefera, 27 October 2008 - Mr. Alian Hutchinson, a delegate from the EU Parliament who conducted a tour of development, agriculture and infrastructure programs in the Southern region, lauded Eritrea's efforts to achieve food security and expand social services in remote areas.

He expressed admiration to the endeavors which Eritrea is exerting to promote the provision of health and educational services, as well as improve the people's standard of living which he personally witnessed. Mr. Alian Hutchinson further asserted that the European Union would work in collaboration with Eritrea.

The head of agricultural development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Hiruy Asgedom, gave briefing to the delegate on Eritrea's priority action to reinforce soil and water conservation, environmental protection, reforestation, development of land plots below micro-dams, boost the number of domestic animals and wildlife, as well as develop rangelands and forests.

Likewise, Mr. Mussa Naib, director general of general education in the Ministry of Education, outlined the endeavors being made to provide educational opportunities in all parts of the country so as to promote active popular participation in the development drive and raise productivity. He also briefed the EU delegate on the ongoing activities to closely address public affairs and upgrade women's standard of living standard through avoiding dependency.

      Eritrean-Iranian relations based on solid foundation, Says Iranian Ambassador

Asmara, 27 October 2008 - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Eritrea, Mr. Reza Al-Amri, said that the Eritrean-Iranian relations is based on solid foundation that dates back to the Eritrean people's armed struggle for independence. He further stated that President Isaias Afwerki's visit to Iran also provided additional impetus to relations between the two countries.

Indicating that Eritrean-Iranian cooperation in the domains of agriculture, trade, the media and investment is progressing well, the Ambassador elaborated that Iran is working diligently to enhance the relations.

Citing the East Sudan Peace Agreement as an example, Mr. Reza Al-Amir lauded Eritrea's role in bringing about solution to the problems of the region without the interference of the big powers and their servants.

As regards regional issues, the Iranian Ambassador pointed out that the Somali issue has been complicated due to the interference of external forces, and as a result the Somali people are in dire condition. He further stated that Iran advocates that the Somalis should resolve their issue themselves, and if necessary, sisterly countries should extend assistance.

Stressing the need for the US Administration to reconsider its erroneous strategy in the East Africa region, Ambassador Reza Al-Amir expressed conviction that the era of US hegemony in the world has come to an end, and that liberty, justice and truth would soon prevail in the world.
