Ukrainian defense ministry says 33 tanks on ship seized off Somalia

Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Ukrainian ship seized off Somalia by pirates had
33 T-72 tanks and "a substantial quantity of ammunition" on board, said
Ukraine's Defence Minister Yury Yekhanurov on Friday.
"All this is sold in accordance
with Ukrainian legislation," Yekhanurov told reporters in Kiev after a
meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
He said that the destination of the vessel was the port of Mombasa, Kenya.
"All other questions you should ask
the state foreign trade investment firm Ukrinmash and the state company
Ukrspets export. They have full information about this because they are
the owners of the goods," the minister said.
The Ukrainian ship Faina with 21
people on board was seized by pirates off eastern Somalia on Thursday,
according to reports.
Ukraine's foreign ministry said in
a statement that the ship's passengers include 17 Ukrainian citizens,
three Russians and a Latvian.
