Six Ugandan soldiers, serving the African Union Mission to Somalia, have been killed after their vehicle hit a landmine in Mogadishu.

The blast took place in Hamar Chachab district near a seaport southwest of the Somali capital, killing six Ugandan soldiers, witnesses told Press TV correspondent in Somalia on Monday.

Unconfirmed reports however say 9 Ugandans have died in the explosion.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

1,600 Ugandan troops, enlisted with the AMISOM, operate in Mogadishu.

AMISOM - which was deployed to Somalia in March 2007 - was meant to replace US-backed Ethiopian troops who invaded Somalia in an attempt to back the country's Transitional Federal Government in year 2006.

However, the Ethiopians who are blamed for loss of thousands of civilian lives did not leave the country once AMISOM took position.

2 UN aid workers kidnapped in Somalia

Unknown gunmen have kidnapped two UN World Food Program employees in Somalia, bringing to 20 the number of aid workers abducted this year.

The two were conducting a nutritional survey in Somalia's southwestern region of Baidoa, between Jowhar and Balad, when they were attacked by unidentified gunmen, their colleague said on Sunday on condition of anonymity.

The motive of the abduction remains unclear.

Humanitarian workers, including foreigners, have been repeatedly targeted by armed groups in Somalia, where so far this year 11 aid workers, including two foreigners, have been killed.

The spate of kidnappings and killings in Somalia has hampered the work of aid agencies in the most-affected nation in the Horn of Africa country, where the UN says one of the world's worst humanitarian catastrophes is unfolding.
